The Big Picure: Your Study. Your Vision. Your Plan for the City of Huntsville

Five Points/Northeast Huntsville Small Area Plan

Five Points and Northeast Huntsville is a rapidly transforming section of the City. In coordination with the Northeast Huntsville Civic Association and the Five Points Historic District Association, and after gathering input from a series of public meetings, the City of Huntsville created a Small Area Plan for this section of the City.

Vision

  • The diversity of recreational opportunities in this study area are preserved and improved as the neighborhoods change
  • Better pedestrian access to schools, parks, and commercial areas is provided via a robust neighborhood sidewalk network, and new crossings traverse major streets.
  • The major corridors in the study area—Oakwood, Pratt, Andrew Jackson, etc.—are attractive gateways to the residential areas.
  • New development is consistent with the nature of the surrounding neighborhood.
  • A completed Dallas Branch Flood Mitigation system eases flooding concerns in the area, and provides a recreational opportunity for the community.

Summary

Five Points and Northeast Huntsville is a rapidly transforming section of the City. Excellent access and proximity to employment (Downtown and Huntsville Hospital) and recreation (Monte Sano and the Land Trust) make it an attractive place for people of all ages.

In coordination with the Northeast Huntsville Civic Association and the Five Points Historic District Association, and after gathering input from a series of public meetings, the City of Huntsville created a Small Area Plan for this section of the City. The plan highlights several topics considered important by the residents of the study area, including:

Parks: Residents identified green spaces, such as neighborhood parks and Land Trust access, as a strength of their community.

Streetscape: Improving streets in accordance with the city-wide Complete Streets policy, including Oakwood, Andrew Jackson and Pratt Avenue.

Pedestrian Connectivity: Highlighting new sidewalks and crosswalks to make access to amenities easier and safer.

Zoning: Encouraging development that enhances the surrounding architecture and land uses. Take a look at the plan’s existing zoning and the zoning plan for the future.
