The Big Picure: Your Study. Your Vision. Your Plan for the City of Huntsville

Vision

  • A modern data infrastructure has ensured that all Huntsville citizens and businesses have access to high-speed, affordable internet.
  • Huntsville’s data infrastructure is an attractor for new industry, particularly in the high-tech and bio-tech sectors as well as start-ups.

About

The implications of data, particularly high-speed networking, are far-reaching for the ways in which cities will grow into the future:

An on-line “urban dashboard” that tracks a range of performance measures for a city, including home sales data, in- and out-migration of population, budget milestones, public safety issues, traffic counts and speeds, regional wages and household income, preserved greenspace, available recreation facilities, and a host of other community characteristics. These can be used to keep local residents informed, and to help attract new industries, residents and investors.

A city-wide traffic data net that tracks in real time the passage of car and transit activity, and adjusts signals on the fly.  It could immediately reroute traffic around incidents or high-congestion segments, and adjust signalization to prioritize movements that would relieve backups.

Actions

Support installation of a high-speed fiber network throughout the community, potentially with a private partner.

Conduct a study on how to best develop a city-wide wireless network that can serve the community, as well as provide the basis for “smart city” functions like traffic control, public safety responses, etc.
