The Big Picure: Your Study. Your Vision. Your Plan for the City of Huntsville

John Hunt Park Master Plan

Once the Huntsville airport found its current home just west of Redstone Arsenal, the City was presented with both a challenge and an opportunity: What to do with the old facility, a very large piece of land centrally located in the community.  Given the rapid growth of the metro area, the ready location adjacent to the Parkway, and the relative dearth of parkland in the area, the answer presented itself quickly: Create a large, regionally-serving park and recreation area.

Vision

  • John Hunt Park is a centrally-located recreation facility that serves the citizens of Huntsville and attracts statewide and regional athletic events.

Summary

Once the Huntsville airport found its current home just west of Redstone Arsenal, the City was presented with both a challenge and an opportunity: What to do with the old facility, a very large piece of land centrally located in the community.  Given the rapid growth of the metro area, the ready location adjacent to the Parkway, and the relative dearth of parkland in the area, the answer presented itself quickly: Create a large, regionally-serving park and recreation area.

Recent capital planning has renewed the focus on John Hunt Park, with the goal of realizing the bulk of the ambitious plan within the next decade.  Not only will the park offer hundreds of acres of park space and recreation fields, but it will also serve as a central link within a broader network of parks.  As the core of the in-town park plan, the renewal of John Hunt Park will serve both to attract valuable economic development to Huntsville, but even more importantly it will offer a tremendous boost to the quality of life for those who call this city home.
