Mayor’s Message

Mayor’s Message

The City of Huntsville is embarking on a major, 18-month comprehensive master planning initiative that will shape the future of our City for decades to come. The BIG Picture is an extensive planning process that will include citizens, leaders and experts in its decision making.

This is the first time in more than 40 years that the City has attempted such a wide-spread planning effort. We have a wonderful city, but at 214 square miles, we recognize our community is changing, and we must be prepared to meet new and evolving demands. Whether it is through economic, demographic, sustainability or environmental concerns, we are called to address an evolving landscape. We want to be proactive as to the possibilities for what Huntsville can become in our future. Some topics we will address over the coming months include plans for neighborhood redevelopment, parks and greenways, transportation, and quality of life.

Leading our master planning process is Dennis Madsen, the City’s Long-Range Urban Planner. He is accompanied by our Planning Director Michelle Jordan, Urban Development Director Shane Davis, and a Steering Committee of 30 community representatives. It is important to us that the public’s voice, ideas, and vision are heard and included.

This is an exciting process, and after our kickoff on May 6, 2014, citizens can expect monthly opportunities to meet and join the conversation. We will have lectures with national planning experts, public forums, online conversations through Imagine Huntsville, a mobile app for citizens to submit photos and suggestions, workshops, and more. All of our events and activities and videos of lectures will be posted here on The BIG Picture web site.

At the end of the process, we expect to have a fully integrated comprehensive master plan that will guide us in our future development. As an organic, breathable document, it will be designed to be adaptable and responsive to the natural evolution of our community.
I hope each and every one of you will join us in this important endeavor, and we look forward to working together as we shape Huntsville for a bright future.
