The Big Picure: Your Study. Your Vision. Your Plan for the City of Huntsville

Berachah Complex Master Plan

The Berachah Academy campus houses a community gymnasium and a small library branch. The surrounding community was engaged in a planning process to outline the vision for the future of Berachah, including a new library.

Vision

  • The redeveloped site has created a gathering area for the community, and added both economic and quality of life value to the neighborhoods around it.

Summary

The Berachah Academy campus sits off Sparkman Drive, just east of the intersection with Pulaski Pike. It currently houses a community gymnasium and a well-loved but decidedly small library branch. Recognizing the need for a new library, the surrounding community was engaged in a planning process to outline the vision for the future of Berachah.

The opportunity for the site was in creating a “neighborhood center”: a place that would reinforce the sense of community, provide a place for residents to get together, and add real value to the surrounding area. Starting with the idea that the training building would be renovated into a new, modern library, and that the gym would remain, the rest of the site became a blank slate. After hearing from the workshop participants, what was shaped was a plan for family-oriented amenities like walking trails, picnic pavilions, and a community garden. Once complete, the site will become a hub of activity and a source of civic identity.
